About Us

Coeliac Western Australia is a not-for-profit organisation providing support, advocacy and awareness for people affected by coeliac disease, dermatitis herpetiformis and others who medically require a gluten free diet.  Our primary objective is to enhance the quality of life for those requiring a gluten free diet.  This is achieved by providing accurate and up-to-date gluten free dietary information, as well as providing information and support through raising awareness and providing education in the community.

Founded in 1979, Coeliac Western Australia has over 1,600 members, and as currently one in every 100 Australian’s has coeliac disease, this number is increasing.  Coeliac Western Australia is part of the national organisation, Coeliac Australia and together we are working toward a higher diagnosis rate to help prevent the further health complications caused by undiagnosed coeliac disease.  Such complications include some cancers, infertility, osteoporosis and more.

Coeliac Western Australia receives some funding from the Department of Health, with the majority of funds raised through membership subscriptions, donations and advertising.  All funds raised by Coeliac Western Australia are used to increase awareness and providing support and advocacy and therefore improve the lives of people with coeliac disease.

We support our members by providing workshops on living a gluten free lifestyle, label reading workshops and supermarket tours.  We publish a monthly electronic newsletter.  Membership also includes our quarterly national magazine.  We provide information, translations and support for members travelling both within Australia and overseas. Becoming a member of Coeliac Western Australia provides members with access to our information and services and contributes to education and research.

Coeliac Western Australia member and dietitian Michelle Sladden is available for appointments at our office.  Michelle was diagnosed in 1991 and has been an Accredited Practicing Dietitian since 1997. She has two daughters who are also coeliac.

Our office is staffed by Lee-Anne Smith (Executive Officer) and Pia Finnigan (Volunteer Coordinator and Policy Officer). We also have dedicated volunteers who give generously of their time to help with the running of the office and functions, especially our annual Expo.

Coeliac Western Australia is passionate about encouraging the availability of gluten free food in restaurants and cafes, as well as increasing the understanding of cross contamination.  Coeliac WA is also focused on increasing the health profession’s awareness and understanding of coeliac disease.

The Coeliac Western Australia office in is located within the Cockburn Integrated Health Facility, Level 1, 11 Wentworth Parade, Cockburn Central and is currently open Monday & Wednesday 10am to 3pm
